Hidden Trips

I took a drive into Nikiski by myself one morning to see what I could find.

I had driven on a paved road toward the waters and stopped to get out and scout around.

I saw some workers of sorts in the way distance, so I felt safe enough to hike

along and knew I could give a shout if I ran into bear trouble.

After taking photos for a while and wondering slowly back along my trail I 

noticed something shimmering deep in the woods.  I had my hiking boots on,

so I tip-toed through the brush to see what was so shiney!

I found this old car buried deep with foliage covering the inside and out!

Away I snapped and fell in love with the shots I took!

Just as you land on the icy run strip in Kenai, collect your luggage and admire the stuffed brown bear, reminding you of the possibilities in running into one of these guys out there, you head out the front doors and hail a cab.  Thinking you won’t see an airplane for a while, all of a sudden you make the bend to exit this arctic aerodome to find a polished World War 2 aircraft guarding it’s entrance.

I ventured back to see it several times during all seasons while living in Kenai and fell most fond of this wintry shot I took during an Alaskan blizzard!

Her nickname is the “T-33 Shooting Star” and was originally operated by the Alaska Air National Guard.  Lockheed Martin began building these in the mid-1940’s; taking it’s first flight around 1948.  While researching this trainer aircraft, I found it to be one of the most popular to display in front of museums and flight schools in over 26 countries. 

Standing beneath the massive wings I often wondered the stories behind her flights.
